I have been running for five years this month.
I started because I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. I bought a book for beginning runners and began. I ran early in the morning when there was no one around to distract me or give me any reason to stop save the occasional skunk or coyote. I ran with my flashlight. I ran in thirty-degree weather bundled up like I was in Alaska in the deep of winter. This is important because I grew up on a tropical island and my bones much prefer the
I would never have ever called myself a runner. Never! Then, I ran my first 5K. The greatest thing is that I received a medal for 3rd place in my age group. I came in third to last in the event. I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t! I knew that it was a fluke. I continued running. Funny things have happened that have caused me to stop for a time. And
So, this year began and I set some goals. One was to run a marathon. Oh, how scary that was! The longest race I’ve ever run was a 10K last May. I declared that that was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I remember reaching the halfway point and heading back to the starting point and seeing the race volunteers picking up cones behind me. I remember the guy on his bicycle riding as I run the last half mile and the woman who joined me to encourage me to the finish line. I remember crossing the finish line and having everyone cheer me so that I felt like I’d just won my first ever race. I crossed the finish line and the festivities began. I was the last person to cross that finish line!
And yet, this May, I will run another 10K. Not just any 10K, but the same one I did last year. I’ve started training and I’m praying that I will at least do a PR. There are so many things that could divert me from my course, yet the idea of being able and ready to run a marathon is ever before me. So, this year’s goal is to do two 10Ks and maybe a half marathon so that next year I will be ready for that Marathon.
