It has been 1 month since I ran the 10K for which I’d been preparing. I began training 10 weeks before race day and I learned so much during that time.
The ten weeks included days of speed runs, tempo runs, long runs, benchmarks, and long runs. I learned that I enjoy speed runs. I love the way they challenge my body to move. I learned that I can run for long periods of times. My longest run was 7 miles. I never thought I could do that without being out of commission for a long time afterwards.
Having the body ready for racing is important. But the mind is just as important. Here is a list of things to consider when preparing the mind for a race:- seeing yourself as a runner; believing that you are a runner; not comparing yourself to others at the start line on race day; being in the moment as you run. Race day dawned and it was a cool 63°F. I thought that I was physically and mentally prepared. I knew this course since it was my second time doing this race. It was flat and went out and back. There were walkers, young people, children, elite men and women, mothers with strollers and people with dogs.
My head was in a good place, my music was pumping and I had a plan. Start off easy for the first 2 miles, pick up the pace for the next 2 miles, faster yet for the next mile, with the final mile the fastest. I spent the first mile running and walking and making a gratitude list, saying it out loud. The entire race seemed to move quickly as I smiled and interacted with people who passed me going in the opposite direction, not at any time neglecting my plan. When I got to about the last mile I decided I had to buckle down and go all out on my way to the finish line. I was joined by two young women who asked to run the last leg with me. One was a little girl who was about 10 and the other was maybe in her early 20s (I discovered later that she’d run a marathon the weekend before!!). What a blessing!
What is the moral of this story? You can do anything you put your mind to. Goals are attainable if you make a plan and work towards them adapting as you go along.
