What hope this scripture gave me? Everyone knows that your mind can take you on a journey. Invariably, it’s not one you planned or really wanted to take. You know, going into the bathroom to take a shower focused soley on that task and coming out ready to shoot anyone who gets in your way. What happened? Well, you got taken. Where you ask? On a journey!
The Bible says “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Prov. 23:7 (NKJV) So, it follows that if you allow your thoughts to get taken, then the response should not surprise you.
I belong to a Facebook group “Running 4Real Superstars.” About two weeks ago the group’s creator had podcasts on Mental Training. Runners know that your success as a runner is not only dependant on physical ability, but it involves engaging the whole body. And whether or not you know it, your mind is the control center. There were so many different responses to these podcasts. I think that everyone agreed that unless your head, that is, your thoughts, are involved in the game, success will elude you. Thoughts left on their own drag you along like your dog after a rabbit. And only downhill, unless you have them under strict control.
Jentezen Franklin in his book, Love Like You’ve Never Been Hurt says, “When you believe the lies of the enemy, we become trapped in a small world…..we try to find temporary relief by numbing ourselves with………. (you fill in the blanks). What we believe becomes our reality. Is your reality worthless, useless, good-for-nothing, junk, redeemed? Or is it forgiven, redeemed, healed, whole, created for great things? (p. 190)
This is a problem with which we are all plagued. How to not be controlled by your thoughts. The Bible says, “Renew your mind.” (Rom.12:2) Essentially, this means, working to make your mind to think differently. This involves acknowledging that our thoughts on the matter are wrong. Then start thinking new thoughts on the matter, reprogramming your mind with the thoughts of God, changing your mind about the situation, looking at it from a new perspective, and so on.
